California Collections
Login to the online textbook can be found at my.hrw.com.

We are piloting a new textbook and resources called California Collections. There is a textbook and two workbooks (Close Reader and Assessment Performance), but the materials will be kept in the classroom unless a student is absent and needs to make up missing assignments.

Students will be receiving a username and password to login to an electronic version of the textbook that has additional resources. I will send a letter home with students with the login information for parents to have as well.

We are going to be using these materials for the rest of this school year to determine if we want to use these materials for next year's English courses.

We will be covering the unit called "Risk and Exploration". During this unit, we will encounter individuals who must confront a compelling questions: How far is too far?

Throughout the unit, students will complete a research project, a short argumentative essay, an informal debate, and other writing assignments.

The required reading will be from the textbook:
Speech Remark at the Dedication of the Aerospace Medical Health Center
Close Reader Essay Is Space Exploration Worth the Cost?
Commentary Why Exploring the Ocean is Mankind's Next Giant Leap?
Science Article from Living in the Dark
Close Reader Article Stinging Tentacles Offer Hint of Oceans' Decline
Poem Your World
Excerpt from the novel Gulliver's Travels

Flipped
If you are absent, check the calendar date for the day you are absent to see if you missed reading a chapter of Flipped. If you did, scroll down to the bottom of the page and open the Flipped Folder. There is a PDF version of the novel. Find the chapter you missed and read it at home. You can also complete the activities in your reading packet for that chapter.

Reading Packet Due Dates
Chapters 1-4 Due Thursday, January 14
Chapters 5-8 Due Friday, January 22

If you are absent for a literary circle day (Chapters 9-14), write on a separate sheet of paper:
  • A paragraph summarizing the chapter you read.
  • Three figurative language devices and examples in that chapter.
  • Two unfamiliar words. The definition based on context clues and the dictionary definition.
  • One discussion question that could be used in a Socratic Seminar or pilot/co-pilot.
Final Project
Students are given three options for the final project. The PDF of the different options and rubrics can be found under the Flipped folder below. The Project is due on Thursday, February 11. No exceptions.

Film Adaptation
Permission slips for the film will be passed out and posted on Tuesday, February 9. If the form your child received in class doesn't make it home, you can download it from the Flipped folder below. The permission slip is due on Friday, February 12 or earlier. If I do not receive a signed permission slip or if I receive a slip that denies the student permission to watch the film will be given an alternative writing assignment that will take the place of the film.

The final will be a computerized test.

The Giver
We are going to be starting a new unit covering the novel The Giver. Students have the option to purchase their own copy of The Giver on their own. A class set will be available to use during class time, so it is not required for a student to purchase his or her own copy. We will be reading the novel in class, so there will be no reason for the student to have a copy at home.

If your student does miss a day of reading, please have him or her see me to make up the missing day.
Quarter 1 Grades
Quarter 1 ends Friday, October 9.

Late work for Quarter 1 is due by Wednesday, October 7. Any Quarter 1 late work turned in after October 7 will nor receive credit. Quarter 1 missing assignments will not be given credit if completed and turned in after Quarter 1 is over.

Check ABI to see what you or your student is missing. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
